Composite bonding

What is composite bonding?

While you may not have heard of composite bonding, you’ve probably seen the many smiles it has enhanced. But, the beauty of composite bonding is that you won’t have even realised any treatment has taken place.

Sometimes called “cosmetic bonding,” this procedure uses tooth-coloured composite resin to reshape and repair your teeth. We apply the resin directly to the teeth before skillfully moulding the material. The results are outstanding. Best of all, it’s quick and comfortable.

Step by step

The composite bonding process

Step one

Clinical assessment & suitability

A thorough bite and aesthetic analysis to make sure composite bonding is the right clinical choice for your long-term oral health.

2
Step two

Digital smile design
& trial smile

We digitally design your new smile and 3D-print a physical model. This lets you test-drive a "trial smile" in your own mouth and approve the look before we touch a tooth.

Using a custom-made matrix/stent from your approved digital design, we apply premium composite resin directly to your teeth with microscopic precision - with no drilling of your natural tooth.

Polishing & texturing

We refine, texture and polish the composite to mimic the natural light-reflecting properties of real enamel.

Fantastic experience! I'm usually scared of the dentist but Michael really put me at ease and I've booked again for 6 months time!

My crown fell out, and I was able to have it reattached in less than a day, which I'm very grateful for. The reception team are always so patient and polite, making the whole experience much better. Michael is a great doctor, and I truly appreciate the care I've received here. I also had my implant done here a year ago - so far so good

Good to know

Composite bonding questions.

Everything patients usually ask before starting their treatment. Can't see your question? We're happy to talk it through.

What’s the difference between composite bonding and veneers?

Composite bonding involves applying tooth-coloured resin directly to your teeth, which is then sculpted and polished to improve their appearance. It’s typically completed in a single visit and usually requires little to no removal of your natural tooth structure. Veneers are thin porcelain shells fabricated in a laboratory that cover the front surface of your teeth and require some tooth preparation. Bonding is more conservative, more affordable, and reversible, making it an excellent option for minor cosmetic improvements. Veneers are more durable and stain-resistant but are a bigger commitment.

How long does composite bonding last?

With proper care, you can typically expect composite bonding to last 5-7 years, though we’ve seen cases last considerably longer in patients who maintain excellent oral hygiene. Composite can chip or stain over time, particularly if you drink a lot of coffee or tea, or if you smoke, but repairs are straightforward and can usually be completed in a single appointment. Whilst it’s not as permanent as porcelain veneers, many patients appreciate that bonding is reversible and can be easily maintained.

Is composite bonding painful?

No, it’s generally not painful at all. That’s one of the key benefits. Because we’re usually just adding material to your existing teeth rather than removing tooth structure, most bonding procedures don’t require any anaesthetic. You might feel some pressure or slight vibration from our instruments, but there shouldn’t be any pain. If any minor reshaping is needed beforehand, we’ll numb the area, but even then, you’re looking at minimal discomfort.

Can composite bonding close gaps between my teeth?

Yes, and it’s one of the most popular reasons patients choose bonding. Small to moderate gaps can be closed beautifully with composite resin in just one appointment. For larger gaps or more complex spacing issues, we might recommend combining bonding with orthodontic treatment first, but Michael will assess your specific case and advise on what will give you the best aesthetic result. The advantage of bonding for gaps is that it’s immediate. No months of waiting for aligners or braces.

Will composite bonding stain over time?

Modern composite materials are much more stain-resistant than older generations, but some discolouration can occur over time, particularly if you regularly drink red wine, coffee, or tea, or if you smoke. That said, any staining can typically be polished away during your routine hygiene appointments. If more significant discolouration occurs, we can replace or touch up the bonding relatively easily. Regular professional cleaning and good home care will keep your bonding looking fresh for longer.

How much tooth preparation is needed for composite bonding?

Usually very little or none at all. This is why bonding is considered such a conservative treatment option. In most cases, we’re purely adding material to your existing tooth structure without removing anything. Occasionally we might do some minimal reshaping to create an ideal foundation, but we’re talking about smoothing edges rather than drilling away healthy tooth tissue. This conservative approach is one of the main reasons patients choose bonding over veneers.

Can I eat and drink normally after composite bonding?

Yes, you can eat and drink immediately after your appointment as the composite is set hard with a special curing light during the procedure. However, it’s worth using a bit of common sense. Composite isn’t quite as strong as your natural enamel or porcelain, so we’d advise against biting directly into very hard foods like raw carrots or crusty bread with your bonded front teeth. You should definitely avoid habits like chewing ice or biting your nails. Treat your bonding sensibly, and it will serve you well for years.

What does the composite bonding procedure involve?

Most bonding treatments are completed in a single appointment lasting one to two hours, depending on how many teeth we’re treating. Michael will begin by slightly roughening the tooth surface to help the composite adhere properly. He’ll then apply the composite resin in layers, carefully sculpting and shaping each layer to achieve the desired result. Each layer is hardened using a special LED curing light. Once Michael is satisfied with the shape and appearance, he’ll polish the bonding until it’s smooth and blends seamlessly with your natural teeth. You’ll leave the practice with your enhanced smile the same day.

How much does composite bonding cost at Bella Dental?

Composite bonding starts from £350 per tooth. The total cost depends on the number of teeth treated and the complexity of the work required.

Can composite bonding fix chipped teeth?

Yes, bonding is one of the most effective treatments for repairing chips and minor fractures. The composite resin is shaped to restore the natural contour of your tooth.

How long does a composite bonding appointment take?

Each tooth typically takes 30-60 minutes. Multiple teeth can often be treated in a single session, making it one of the quickest cosmetic improvements available.

Is composite bonding suitable for back teeth?

Composite bonding is primarily used for front teeth where aesthetics are the priority. For back teeth under heavy chewing forces, crowns or inlays may be more durable options.
